Objectives: The purpose of study was to understand the relationships and structural paths among various variables related to parenting style?including over-expectation, over-involvement, inconsistent parenting? and their effects on depression and aggression of adolescents.
Methods: Data on 1,087 boys and 971 girls in 3rd grade middle school were drawn from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey and analyzed using path analysis.
Results: First, adolescents¡¯ depression was not directly affected by their parent¡¯s over-expectation. Second, adolescents¡¯ aggression fully mediates between over-involved parenting and the adolescents¡¯ depression. Third, adolescents¡¯ aggression partially mediates between inconsistent parenting and adolescents¡¯ depression.
Conclusions: Research and practice implications were discussed regarding the effects of parental over-expectation, over-involvement, and inconsistent parenting on adolescents¡¯ depression and aggression.
